Osteoarthritis and chiropractic care
Osteoarthritis makes joints painful and stiff, and the hips and knees are among the joints it affects most.
Exercise and advice are the core treatments for osteoarthritis, along with the care you get from your GP. Chiropractic care for hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis is offered alongside these, not instead of them. Ismail is also a Level 3 Personal Trainer, so he builds exercises around your home and your routine.
What happens at your home visit
Your first visit starts with questions about your hips and knees, your health and your history. Ismail then carries out a thorough assessment: how you move, your posture, and neurological and orthopaedic checks. He explains what he finds in plain words.
If chiropractic care is right for you, it may include gentle mobilisation, soft tissue work, and an exercise programme to do at home. He explains what he would like to do and why, and only goes ahead with your consent. If you need a different kind of care, he will tell you and suggest you see your GP. See every step of a home visit.
Get medical help first if
See your GP, call 111, or call 999 in an emergency, if you have hip or knee pain and:
- a joint that is hot, red and swollen, or a high temperature
- you can't put weight on your leg
- pain that started after a fall or an injury
What the research says
A 2026 review of 23 trials with 996 people found mobilisation with movement reduced pain and disability in knee osteoarthritis, with bigger effects when it was combined with other therapies.
A 2024 review of 25 studies with 2,376 people found manual therapy may reduce knee osteoarthritis pain, more so after 4 weeks of treatment, and appears to be safe.
NICE recommends that manual therapy (such as manipulation, mobilisation or soft tissue techniques) is considered for hip or knee osteoarthritis only alongside therapeutic exercise, not on its own.
A review of manual therapy for leg and foot problems, which assessed 48 clinical trials, found fair evidence for manual therapy in the short-term treatment of hip and knee osteoarthritis.

Questions
Can a chiropractor help with osteoarthritis?
Hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis is one of the problems chiropractors are trained to assess and treat, alongside exercise and your usual treatment. Ismail starts with a thorough assessment and explains what he finds before suggesting any care.
Should I stop my usual treatment?
No. Chiropractic care is offered alongside exercise and the care you get from your GP, not instead of them.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on what Ismail finds. At your report of findings he explains what he recommends, and you decide together.
