Shoulder pain and chiropractic care
Chiropractors are trained to assess and treat shoulder complaints: shoulder pain and stiffness, soft tissue disorders of the shoulder, and rotator cuff injuries. The rotator cuff is the group of muscles and tendons that keep the shoulder joint steady and help you lift and turn your arm.
Ismail checks how your shoulder, neck and upper back move, along with your strength and neurological checks.
What happens at your home visit
Your first visit starts with questions about your shoulder, your health and your history. Ismail then carries out a thorough assessment: how you move, your posture, and neurological and orthopaedic checks. He explains what he finds in plain words.
If chiropractic care is right for you, it may include gentle mobilisation or chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue work, kinesiology taping, and exercises to do at home. He explains what he would like to do and why, and only goes ahead with your consent. If you need a different kind of care, he will tell you and suggest you see your GP. See every step of a home visit.
Get medical help first if
See your GP, call 111, or call 999 in an emergency, if you have shoulder pain and:
- chest pain, breathlessness or sweating (call 999)
- a shoulder that looks out of place, or an arm you can't move after a fall or injury
- a hot, red or swollen shoulder, or a high temperature
What the research says
A 2026 review of 19 trials with 956 people found that adding joint mobilisation to usual physiotherapy reduced pain and improved movement and function in the short term for shoulder impingement (shoulder pain when lifting the arm).
A 2025 review found that adding mobilisation (the Mulligan technique) to usual care improved pain, function and shoulder movement in rotator cuff problems, compared with usual care alone.
A 2025 review of 7 trials with 393 people found manual therapy to the upper back, alone or with exercise, reduced pain and disability in subacromial pain syndrome, a common cause of shoulder pain, especially in the short term.
An update of the UK evidence report, from the University of Warwick, raised the evidence for manipulation and mobilisation, with exercise, for rotator cuff disorders from inconclusive to moderate.
A systematic review found fair evidence for manual therapy to the shoulder and the areas linked to it, combined with exercise or other care, for rotator cuff injuries and disorders, and for shoulder pain and dysfunction.

Questions
Can a chiropractor help with shoulder pain?
Shoulder pain and stiffness, soft tissue disorders of the shoulder and rotator cuff injuries are among the problems chiropractors are trained to assess and treat. Ismail starts with a thorough assessment and explains what he finds before suggesting any care.
Do I need to see my GP first?
No, you can book directly, without a GP referral. If you have any of the warning signs on this page, get medical help first.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on what Ismail finds. At your report of findings he explains what he recommends, and you decide together.
