Back pain and chiropractic care
Back pain is one of the main reasons people see a chiropractor. Chiropractors are trained to assess and treat general, acute and long-standing (chronic) backache, including lumbago and low back pain around the SI joints, where the spine meets the pelvis.
When your back is sore, a car journey and a waiting room are the last things you want. With a home visit, Ismail brings a portable treatment bench to you.
What happens at your home visit
Your first visit starts with questions about your back, your health and your history. Ismail then carries out a thorough assessment: how you move, your posture, and neurological and orthopaedic checks. He explains what he finds in plain words.
If chiropractic care is right for you, it may include chiropractic adjustments or gentle mobilisation, soft tissue work, and exercises to do at home. He explains what he would like to do and why, and only goes ahead with your consent. If you need a different kind of care, he will tell you and suggest you see your GP. See every step of a home visit.
Get medical help first if
See your GP, call 111, or call 999 in an emergency, if you have back pain and:
- numbness or tingling around your genitals or bottom
- difficulty peeing, or loss of control of your bladder or bowels
- numbness or weakness in both legs, or weakness that is getting worse
- chest pain, a high temperature or weight loss you can't explain
- pain that started after a fall or an accident
What the research says
NICE, which writes the national health guidance for England, recommends considering manual therapy (spinal manipulation, mobilisation or soft tissue techniques such as massage) for low back pain, as part of a treatment package that includes exercise.
A 2026 umbrella review, bringing together 21 systematic reviews with 35,711 people, found manual therapy gave significant short-term reductions in pain and disability for long-standing low back pain.
A 2026 review found that adding manual therapy to exercise improved disability (how much back pain limits daily life) more than exercise alone, in both the short and the long term.
A 2025 review of 10 studies found that manual therapy added to exercise improved short-term pain, function and disability more than exercise alone, and recommended adding it.
The World Health Organization's 2023 guideline on long-standing low back pain lists spinal manipulative therapy among the treatments that may be used for adults, alongside other non-drug care such as exercise and education.

Questions
Can a chiropractor help with back pain?
Back pain, including lumbago and long-standing backache, is one of the problems chiropractors are trained to assess and treat. Ismail starts with a thorough assessment and explains what he finds before suggesting any care.
Do I need to see my GP first?
No, you can book directly, without a GP referral. If you have any of the warning signs on this page, get medical help first.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on what Ismail finds. At your report of findings he explains what he recommends, and you decide together.
