Neck pain and chiropractic care
Chiropractors are trained to assess and treat mechanical neck pain: pain and stiffness coming from the joints, muscles and soft tissues of the neck, including neck pain that has lasted a long time.
Neck pain after an injury, such as a car accident or a fall, is different: get it checked by your GP or at A&E first. If you also get headaches arising from the neck, see headaches arising from the neck, and migraine prevention.
What happens at your home visit
Your first visit starts with questions about your neck, your health and your history. Ismail then carries out a thorough assessment: how you move, your posture, and neurological and orthopaedic checks. He explains what he finds in plain words.
If chiropractic care is right for you, it may include chiropractic adjustments or gentle mobilisation, soft tissue work, and exercises and advice on how you sit and work at home. He explains what he would like to do and why, and only goes ahead with your consent. If you need a different kind of care, he will tell you and suggest you see your GP. See every step of a home visit.
Get medical help first if
See your GP, call 111, or call 999 in an emergency, if you have neck pain and:
- a high temperature, a headache or a rash
- a sudden, severe headache
- numbness, pins and needles or weakness in your arms or hands
- pain that started after a fall or an accident
What the research says
A 2025 review of 8 trials with 965 people found spinal manipulation reduced pain and disability and improved neck movement in recent (acute) neck pain, with no serious side effects reported.
A 2025 review of 11 trials concluded that manual therapy and exercise may be considered effective for reducing long-standing neck pain, and that combining them was the most likely best choice.
Guidelines built from 41 good-quality trials made strong recommendations for manipulation, manual therapy and exercise, combined with other care, for long-standing neck pain, and moderate recommendations for manipulation and mobilisation, combined with other care, for recent neck pain.
In a trial of 272 adults with recent neck pain, spinal manipulation gave better pain results than medication, in both the short and the long term. A few sessions of home exercise with advice gave similar results, which is why Ismail adds exercises to your care.
The UK evidence report concluded that manipulation and mobilisation of the upper back are effective for recent neck pain, and that massage is effective for long-standing neck pain.

Questions
Can a chiropractor help with neck pain?
Mechanical neck pain, including long-standing neck pain, is one of the problems chiropractors are trained to assess and treat. Ismail starts with a thorough assessment and explains what he finds before suggesting any care.
Do I need to see my GP first?
No, you can book directly, without a GP referral. If you have any of the warning signs on this page, get medical help first.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on what Ismail finds. At your report of findings he explains what he recommends, and you decide together.
