Elbow pain and tennis elbow, seen at home

Elbow pain linked to problems in your neck or upper back, assessed in your own home.

Elbow pain and chiropractic care

Elbow pain, including tennis elbow and golfer's elbow, can be linked to problems in the neck or upper back. That kind of elbow pain is among the problems chiropractors are trained to assess and treat. Tennis elbow is pain on the outside of the elbow; golfer's elbow is pain on the inside. Both can make gripping, lifting and twisting painful.

Ismail checks how your neck, upper back, shoulder and elbow move, with strength and neurological checks, to see whether your elbow pain is linked to your neck or upper back. If it isn't, he will tell you and suggest who to see instead.

What happens at your home visit

Your first visit starts with questions about your elbow, your health and your history. Ismail then carries out a thorough assessment: how you move, your posture, and neurological and orthopaedic checks. He explains what he finds in plain words.

If chiropractic care is right for you, it may include gentle mobilisation or chiropractic adjustments for your neck and upper back, soft tissue work, kinesiology taping, and exercises to do at home. He explains what he would like to do and why, and only goes ahead with your consent. If you need a different kind of care, he will tell you and suggest you see your GP. Get medical help first if

See your GP, call 111, or call 999 in an emergency, if you have elbow pain and:

  • chest pain, breathlessness or pain spreading to your arm, neck or jaw (call 999)
  • an elbow that looks out of shape, or that you can't move, after a fall or injury
  • a hot, red or swollen elbow, or a high temperature
  • numbness or weakness in your arm or hand that is getting worse

Questions

Do I need to see my GP first?

No, you can book directly, without a GP referral. If you have any of the warning signs on this page, get medical help first.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on what Ismail finds. At your report of findings he explains what he recommends, and you decide together.
